She began to realize the challenges Americans faced as pensions disappeared and the burden of saving for and managing a retirement income fell on individuals. Not only would legislation and policy need to change, but people were also going to need help. She left Capitol Hill to pursue her Certified Financial Planner designation and has worked in the industry ever since.
From the beginning, Kim has worked for fee-only firms. When first interviewing for jobs, commission-based firms talked about sales training and asked her to create lists of people to whom she could sell insurance and annuities. In contrast, fee-only firms told her she didn’t know enough to do anything but answer the phone and it would take years of learning to actually advise people. She immediately saw the difference in how fee-only firms were truly focused on helping the client and chose to start out answering the phone! Kim is currently a CFP and member of NAPFA.
Kim is married with two children and lives with her family in Ellicott City. She is passionate about health and fitness.
